“Dear customers, we regret to inform you of a system collapse on the national grid at precisely 11:27 am today, Wednesday, July 20. We are in talks with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to ascertain the cause of the collapse and a possible restoration timeline.

“We will keep you updated on the situation,” the Disco said via its Twitter handle on Wednesday”

As expected, the collapse is expected to cut off power to some areas of the country.

Nigeria’s power grid had collapsed twice this year, once in March and once in April, as power generation on the system continued to fluctuate due to various concerns such as gas constraints, water management issues, and gas pipeline vandalism, among others.

The PUNCH reported in April that the quantum of electricity on the grid had plummeted from over 3,000MW on April 8, 2022, to as low as 10MW around 21.00 hours that day.

The national power grid went down for the sixth time this year, as The PUNCH reported on June 13 that the grid had gone down for the fifth time in 2022.

In addition, the national grid failed twice in March, both times within two days, prompting the Federal Government to convene a meeting of stakeholders to address the issue.
