It has been over five months since the #LekkiMassacre incident where men of the Nigerian Army according to several eyewitnesses reports and live Instagram video coverage by a popular entertainer, DJ Switch opened fire on #EndSARS protesters.

Since the October 20, 2020, #LekkiMassacre incident, there has been some back and forth as regards whether protesters were killed by the Nigerian Army or not.

The authenticity of the incident has divided opinions since then even though the Lagos State Government set-up a Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate the incident as well allegations of police brutality levelled against members of the now-defunct unit of the police – SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad).

The latest report by the United States Government titled, “2020 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Nigeria.’ has doubted the actuality of the incident citing that no other organisation aside Amnesty International was able to corroborate the claim that protesters were shot at and killed eventually.

“On October 20, members of the security forces enforced curfew by firing shots into the air to disperse protesters, who had gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos to protest abusive practices by the Nigerian Police Force’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

“Accurate information on fatalities resulting from the shooting was not available at year’s end. Amnesty International reported 10 persons died during the event, but the government disputed Amnesty’s report, and no other organisation was able to verify the claim.
