Ashley Tisdale took to Twitter Thursday after a mini-controversy in which she was criticized for buying 400 books ahead of an Architectural Digest shoot at her Los Angeles home.

In a segment in which Tisdale showed off her $4.75 million Mediterranean-style villa, the 36-year-old actress admitted she sent husband Chris French out to purchase ‘400 books’ to fill up her bare bookshelves.

The remark spurred a torrent of social media responses, as some people believed the High School Musical star had misrepresented herself with the expansive collection of books, while others defended her for helping fund authors.

Some people said there was no reason to be upset with the actress for being honest about the purchases.

Tisdale, who has her own interior design business, clarified that not all of the books were freshly purchased for the Architectural Digest showcase in a tweet on Wednesday.

‘Let’s clear this up,’ she said. ‘There are some of my books from over the years in there but yea 36 shelves that hold 22 books I did not have and any interior designer would have done the same. They do it all the time, I was just honest about it.’

On Thursday, the New Jersey-born star addressed her critics with a sense of humor on the issue, and also offered her followers reading recommendations.

'These bookshelves, I have to be honest, actually did not have books in them a couple days ago,' Ashley revealed in a video. 'I had my husband go to the bookstore and I was like, "You need to get 400 books"'

‘Sorry I haven’t been reading everybody’s tweets,’ Tisdale said, ‘I’ve recently just got a lot of new books to get through.

‘On a serious note tho, here are some books that I do want to recommend. I love self-help books because I love talking about mental health – it’s why I founded Frenshe. And if you wanna talk about books with me, you can join our book club – every Sat at 9am to talk about mental health on Instagram.com/frenshe. We’re reading Lucinda Bassett‘s Attacking Anxiety & Depression :).’

She also advised her followers ‘to shop independently,’ adding, ‘If you can’t send your husband, go to Bookshop.org.’

In the clip, Tisdale was forthright about obtaining the books for the media piece.

‘These bookshelves, I have to be honest, actually did not have books in them a couple days ago,’ Ashley revealed in a video. ‘I had my husband go to the bookstore and I was like, “You need to get 400 books.”‘

‘Obviously my husband was like, “We should be collecting books over time and putting them in the shelves.” And I was like, “No, no, no, no.”‘ she added.

‘I pretty much designed this whole house through Instagram,’ she explained. ‘We weren’t really going to stores and stuff, and we weren’t going out. I was pregnant, so I was being super safe.’

‘I went with the mentality of falling in love with every piece,’ she added.

Tisdale and French purchased the home in January of 2021 and it features three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms and gorgeous views of the Hollywood Hills.

Built in 1923, it was previously owned by film executive Roeg Sutherland (son of actor Donald Sutherland), who bought the property for $4.22 million.

‘I fully love this house. I love every piece of everything I’ve done here, and I’m really proud of myself,’ she said.

Ashley described her style as ‘neutral chic but also quirky and fun.’ Her living space is a mix of textures – with wood, marble, leather and furs – all mixed together in a calming palette of warm neutral shades with pops of black.

‘I was never into color as much. I was always into neutrals. And there’s something about being pregnant and seeing little spots where I could add color to it that made me feel like, ‘Oh, this gonna be a fun home,’ she said.

One space with a decidedly more obvious flare for whimsy is her daughter’s nursery, which Ashley re-did after the baby was born to give it more impact.

‘I started to get to know her, and I was like, okay, this is a little bit too vanilla-y for her. We need to pump up the funkiness because she just has a cool, fun personality,’ Tisdale explained. ‘I think she has a design eye to be honest.’
