Bandits in Kaduna State’s Birnin Gwari Local Government Area are now demanding cooked meals in exchange for kidnapped victims.

Since the state government outlawed weekly markets as part of attempts to combat insecurity in the state, the bandits are claimed to have recovered from targeting villages.

Babangida Yaro, a youth leader in one of Birnin Gwari’s villages, told Daily Trust that since the ban, bandits abducting individuals in Damari, Kutemashi, and Kuyello villages have only asked for prepared food.

According to him, a ban on the selling of fuel in remote villages’ filling stations had also hampered their mobility.

There is relative peace around Damari, kuyello, Kutemashi because the bandits have stopped attacking our communities. They usually stay in the forest and seiz food items, mostly cooked ones from vendors,” he said.

He went on to say that when they kidnap two or three people at a farm, one is permitted to obtain food from their families as a ransom because there is no communication network.

The area around Dogon Dawa is still not fully safe, according to the youth leader, because residents are still afraid of losing access to their farmlands.

Babangida also bemoaned the fact that the restriction on private motorcycles in villages had made life more difficult for both bandits and people.
