The Bachelor vet Ben Higgins opened up about why abstaining from premarital sex was the ‘right’ choice for him and his wife Jessica Clarke.
Higgins, 33, tied the knot with Jessica in late 2021 and previously discussed their decision to wait to have sex until after they married.
During an appearance on the Talking It Out podcast, Higgins broke down why they decided to refrain from being physically intimate and the benefits it had on their relationship.

‘There’s multiple angles to why that decision was made, right,’ the reality star explained to fellow Bachelor stars Bryan Abasolo and Mike Johnson.
‘I think people hear it from the outside and they assume it was strictly a faith decision. A religious decision might be the better way to explain that. It wasn’t solely that.’
‘We both believe in Jesus. That is something that is at the foundation, the corner of our life. It is what we try to have everything come out of,’ he said.
‘We also, because of that, do believe that sex is sacred. We believe it is something very powerful. Something very important to consider and hold dear, to talk about, to express. We also believe it’s an awesome thing. It’s a gift.’

Higgins said their different relationship backgrounds also led to their decision to remain celibate.
‘For Kaitlyn Bristowe calling me out and saying, “Are you a virgin?” Right? And I said, “No I’m not.” And I wasn’t. Now Jessica had her whole life and she had held sex dear and had abstained from sex her whole life.’
‘We both talked it out and said, “What is the wise thing to do here for us?” It was, “Hey, you’ve worked so hard to keep this moment special for you and I have had failed relationships where that has been a part of my life. And so, let’s try. Like, let’s see what happens there because we have a whole life together.”‘

Neither one of them also imagined COVID would last as long as it did, pushing back their wedding.
‘We didn’t think COVID was going to shut down our wedding for a year and a half,’ he explained. ‘So the big joke on us was “Hey, let’s wait a year longer than you expected!”
‘So the question was what came of that? One was it wasn’t easy. So it forced us to grow stronger together in our commitment to each other,’ he said. ‘It also got us really excited for when we did get married. There was something very special there. Something that we were going to work through as a married couple when we had already committed our lives to each other.
‘And then finally, I think there was a level, too, where because that physical part of our relationship was not an option, it forced us and allowed us to communicate with our words a lot easier. And so we talked things out.’

However, Higgins acknowledged the path they took wasn’t for everyone.
‘I’m not going to say it’s for everybody. I would not put my stake in the ground and say “Everybody should do this.” At all. I actually would very much push against that and say, “No, this is a decision you need to make if it is right for you.”
‘But for us it was right, and it feels right, and it feels like it was a healthy decision… I guess I’m proud of myself that I was able to respect my wife and her decision, her whole life, and I’m proud of her because now it’s very healthy and we have that special bond that existed once we got married.’
