Brendan Fevola's partner Alex reveals her shock after discovering he'd gambled away their savings 2

Alex Fevola has spoken about the shock moment she discovered her long-term partner Brendan Fevola had ‘gambled an entire year’s wages away’.

Speaking on the Mamamia No Filter podcast, the 45-year-old makeup artist said she was devastated after learning the AFL star lost all their savings.

‘The pay hadn’t gone into the account, and I thought, “That’s so strange. What’s going on?” And I couldn’t get onto anybody, no one was answering my calls…’ she recounted.

‘Eventually, someone answered my call and told me that, “yeah, there was no pay” and it was that entire year’s worth of pay.’

Alex said she was off work at the time because she’d just had a baby, and described the discovery as ‘daunting’.

‘I was actually just in disbelief. I could not believe that this would all happen and no one would notify me,’ she continued.

‘The biggest shock of it all was that this had gone on behind the scenes, and nobody thought it was important to tell me that that’s what was happening.

‘I had to go into recovery mode… We had to get out of where we were living. We’d just bought a house. We had to sell everything.’

The couple were living in Brisbane at the time, and Alex said she and their three children moved back in with her mother in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Brendan, now 41, moved in with a teammate as they attempted to rebuild their lives from scratch.

Earlier in the interview, Alex confessed she’d suspected Brendan had a gambling issue around 12 months into their relationship.

She said she’d noticed Brendan was bad at managing his finances, and added that he was ‘always the life of the party’.

Alex said she eventually took over managing their shared finances, but explained Brendan still had access to their money.

Talking on his radio show Fifi, Fev & Nick earlier this month, Brendan took responsibility for the couple’s ‘rocky’ times.

‘Obviously as a family, we’re going really well now, but there were times in our past where things were rocky,’ he said, referring to his infidelity and gambling problem.

Addressing Alex, he added: ‘We weren’t together, and I’d lost all our money, and you were stuck with the kids…

‘I wasn’t working, I’d been sacked, and you were literally looking after me and paying for things that I needed, too.’

Alex admitted that while it had been ‘hard’ and ‘a juggle’, she’d ‘had a lot of help’ from both of their mothers.

‘We had houses and we had to sell them, and then you moved in with your mum, because we couldn’t afford a house,’ Brendan continued.

Alex added: ‘We had to sell everything really quickly. We ended up with pretty much nothing left… It was a very, very difficult time. It was tough.’

Brendan and Alex were married in 2005, before divorcing in 2014 and getting engaged once again two years later.

They previously split in 2006 after the footy star’s brief and controversial affair with bikini model Lara Bingle, who is now married to actor Sam Worthington.

Over the years, the goalkicker was also plagued by a gambling addiction that nearly drove him to suicide in late 2010 after he lost almost a million dollars.

In 2011, Brendan ended up going to rehab for 60 days for gambling, drinking and depression, and was temporarily banned from playing AFL.
