Two people have been allegedly stabbed by a knifeman at a popular shopping centre in Melbourne.   

The attacker allegedly stabbed the shoppers at a Coles in Barkly Square Shopping Centre on Sydney Road at Brunswick at 8am on Monday. 

Staff were forced to lock themselves inside their stores while the attack unfolded.

‘There’s a guy running around with a knife and he stabbed a customer in the Coles supermarket,’ one person said.

‘All of the employees are locked up in their various shops,’ she said. 

Police arrested the man before he was taken to hospital to be treated for self-inflicted wounds. 

Two men were also taken to hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
