Camila Cabello confesses her crush on Harry Styles spurred her on to audition for The X Factor 2

A decade has passed since she auditioned for The X Factor and formed part of girl band Fifth Harmony.

And now a solo sensation, Camila Cabello has confessed for the first time her true intention behind auditioning for the singing competition.

The chart-topper, 25, was the latest star to grace the passenger seat in James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke and she told the Late Late Show host that a crush on Harry Styles spurred her on to apply for the show that kickstarted her thriving career.

Admitting she was a huge fan of One Direction – the boy band which Harry found fame with on X Factor in 2010 – Camila told a bemused James: ‘This is really embarrassing and I can only say this because it’s like 10 years ago… but I was literally like, “I’m auditioning for X Factor because I will marry Harry Styles!” I really believed that at the time.’

She restated: ‘I didn’t think we were going to get married but I was like, “I’m gonna audition for X Factor, we’re gonna meet and I’m gonna become a singer and we’ll probably fall in love!”

‘That’s the first time I’ve ever confessed the real intention behind me auditioning for X Factor!’

Camila auditioned for the show as a solo contestant in 2012, in the same way Harry did two years prior.

After being eliminated during the bootcamp stage, she was called back along with Ally Brooke, Normani, Lauren Jauregui and Dinah Jane, who went on to form Fifth Harmony.

The girl band, under the mentoring of Simon Cowell, placed third and was branded the ‘biggest girl group of the 2010s’ by Billboard.

After six years, the girls went on a hiatus to allow time for solo pursuits, with Camila leaving in 2016.

‘Honestly? No,’ Camila said when asked whether she misses being in a band, ‘There’s no hard feeling from me about it, cos we were so young. I’m such a different person than that time.’

After belting out her megahit Havana, James asked the Cuban-born pop singer about her journey to America.

Camila candidly recalled the moment she crossed the border into the US with her Cuban mother, leaving her Mexican father behind.

‘I was seven years old; we had to leave my dad in Mexico. [My mum] had basically the clothes on her back, barely any money, didn’t speak English.

‘My family was like, “you’re going to Disney World!” I had no idea what was happening. I had my little diary and Monsters Inc. doll and that was it.’

When quizzed on her father’s journey, Camila provided an extraordinary detail to the story.

‘My dad literally crossed a river, he swam. He literally crossed the border. I don’t know how long it was,’ she said.

The star, who split from Canadian singer Shawn Mendes in November 2021, answered no on a ‘technicality’ to ‘have you slid into any DMs’, which flagged up as a lie.

Yet she was sure to leave tongues wagging when she answered yes – a truth – to ‘has anyone verified slid into your DMs’.
