Comedian Gina Riley's Child Maggie McKenna Identifies As A 'trans Non-binary Person'

Maggie McKenna, the child of Kath & Kim star Gina Riley, has revealed their gender identity.

The 25-year-old, who was previously believed to have identified as female, tells this week’s issue of Stellar that they identify as a a ‘trans non-binary person’.

The actor, who uses they/them pronouns, said they had to come to terms with their feelings before coming out, despite having the support of loved ones.

‘As a sensitive, shy person, I was like, “Oh well, if I have these feelings, I’m just going to shut them down as far as I can and try to ignore them'” they told the magazine on Saturday.

‘Even though I was in a very accepting family and had incredible friends, even then I didn’t feel safe enough to come out,’ they continued.

‘Back in the day, if you were an actor, you couldn’t come out as gay because you wouldn’t work. You wouldn’t be cast.

‘So even watching all of that in the entertainment industry as a kid, that probably set up for me to be like, “Oh, well, if I want to be an actor, I can’t be gay”‘.

Maggie is the only child of comedian Gina Riley, 61, and her producer husband Rick McKenna.

A skilled stage performer, Maggie starred in Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical in 2018, and was cast as the lead in the hit stage version of the 1994 comedy classic, as well starring in the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill this year.

‘I was very confused as a kid, both gender-wise and sexuality-wise’ Maggie told ABC in February.

‘It took me a couple of years of going: “none of this feels right. But I can’t express it yet”. [I felt so connected] to non-binary people.

‘I was very confused as a kid, both gender-wise and sexuality-wise’ Maggie told ABC in February. ‘It took me a couple of years of going: “none of this feels right. But I can’t express it yet”. [I felt so connected] to non-binary people’

‘That’s why representation is so important, because I was able to finally see myself in little snippets of people on TV or in theatre and just go, “oh, I think this is actually who I am”‘.

Maggie has previously said that they had excellent role models in the entertainment industry and often seeks the advice of their mother for their own performances.

‘I still have mad respect for what she did and how she changed the game for women in the industry’ Maggie told The Daily Telegraph of their mother.
