The House of Representatives has advised President Mohammadu Buhari to release inmates and converts prisons across the country to isolation centers.
A honourable representing representing Aguata Federal Constituency of Anambra State under the flagship of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) said this in a press release yesterday.
The advised President Mohammadu Buhari to set prisoners free and use the correctional facilities across the country in order to contain the growing spread of the Coronavirus in the country.
In his exact words:
“All prisoners Nationwide should be released and all prison facilities converted to Isolation Centres for the treatment of Corona Virus across the country. A delay will lead to severe number of casualties. The virus must be taken seriously and preventive measures, deployed to enable the national survive the pandemic”, he warned.”
“The impact of the virus, will be worse on large number of people in an enclosure. Nigerian prisons are overcrowded and notorious for poor hygiene standards. The spread of the virus under such environment, will be rapid and deadly.
“As a matter of urgency, the Government should carry out proper documentation of prisoners to ensure their return to prison after the end of the epidemic”.
The country as at now has 12 confirmed cases of Coronavirus cases and measures have already being taken as institutions: schools especially have been shut down and travel bans has also being placed on thirteen countries who have more than 1000 confirmed cases of Coronavirus.
