The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken delivery of 200 ventilators from the United States today in a short ceremony held in Abuja.

The United States had earlier promised Nigeria of the ventilators to help in the fight against COVID-19 during a telephone conversation between President Donald Trump and President Muhammadu Buhari in April.

Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ohanire received the ventilators on behalf of President Buhari from the Ambassador of the United States to Nigeria, Her Excellency, Marybeth Leonard.

Dr Ohanire said;

We shall be taking delivery these ventilators to shore up our intensive care response capability courtesy of the @POTUS & #US people”

“It is my pleasure to be here at the Premier Medical Warehouse Abuja at the invitation of @USAIDNigeria on behalf of the @USAGov to receive valuable medical equipment that will support @NigeriaGov in their fight against the #COVID19 pandemic”.

I wish to convey the appreciation of @NGRPresident @MBuhari & @NigeriaGov to @POTUS & @USAGov for this generous consideration & friendly gesture”

He also said the ventilators will go a long to help the country in its fight against COVID-19

This donation consists of 200 ventilators which are critical components of the response strategy that will help to save the lives of persons who have been severely impacted by #COVID19. These ventilators will be of great benefit to the people of #Nigeria”

“I wish to also commend @USAIDNigeria, @USCDCNIGERIA & the US Ambassador to Nigeria Her Excellency #MaryBethLeonard for their interest & engagement in Nigeria even beyond the advent of #COVID19”.

In his closing remarks, the Minister of Health also enjoined the United States to lend its full weight alongside global efforts in order to find a vaccine that will neutralise the virus and at the same time make it accessible to all countries

I conclude by requesting @USAGov to lend it’s full weight to global efforts to find efficacious therapeutics & vaccines to neutralize the threat of #COVID19 in the global community & also to guarantee fair allocation to all countries & people”.
