Matchroom Boxing, the promoter of Dimitry Bivol, requested an exemption from the WBA’s mandatory title defense against Gilberto Ramirez, a former WBO super middleweight champion and top contender, and instead proposed a fight against Joshua Buatsi. However, the WBA rejected the request on 10 August 2022, and a purse bid was scheduled for 21 August when the two parties failed to reach an agreement. The minimum bid for the fight was set at $400,000, with a 75% split in favor of Bivol. The two camps eventually agreed to a fight between Bivol and Ramirez in the United Arab Emirates on 5 November 2022. Bivol won the fight by unanimous decision, with scores of 117–111, 117–111, and 118–110, after outlanding Ramirez 131 to 107 in overall punches and 64 to 38 in jabs, despite his opponent’s narrow lead of 69 to 67 in power connects. Bivol expressed his desire to face unified light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev for a title unification bout during the post-fight interview. Bivol was later named The Ring “Fighter of the Year” for 2022.

Since 2018, Dmitry Bivol has successfully defended his WBA Super light-heavyweight and WBA light-heavyweight titles six times. In 2019, he defended his title against Joe Smith Jr. and in May 2021, he defended his title against Craig Richard.
