Emily Ratajkowski hits back at ‘horrendous’ online backlash to Robin Thicke groping allegations

Emily Ratajkowski hits back at 'horrendous' online backlash to Robin Thicke groping allegations 2

American model Emily Ratajkowski has defended her decision to publicly accuse Robin Thicke of sexual assault in her new book of essays, My Body

The model, 30, claimed last month that singer Robin, 44, groped her on the set of the music video for his track Blurred Lines, in which she appeared eight years ago.

Her claims sparked some backlash from online critics, with some questioning why she’d waited until she was selling a book to go public with the allegations.

Others cruelly claimed that she had no right to complain about feeling humiliated, given she was topless during the raunchy film clip.

Speaking to Stellar magazine this weekend, Emily described the backlash on Twitter as ‘horrendous’, insisting that this victim-blaming mentality is the reason why so many alleged sexual assaults go unreported.

‘It’s funny because there’s so much irony – before the news leaked, I was doing a lot of interviews and people were like, ‘Post #MeToo era blah blah blah.’ And I was, ‘Yeah, power to women telling their stories’,’ she said.

‘Then, after the [sexual assault allegations] leaked, I was like, ‘Right, this is why no-one talks about any of these experiences, because you just get completely ripped apart.”

Explaining her decision to go public with the allegations, Emily said she hopes to expose the ‘larger system that allows for abuse and mistreatment’ of women and the existence of ‘unequal power dynamics’.

Emily was 21 years old when she danced topless in the video for the song, a massive hit that spent 12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.

In the video, Emily and fellow models Elle Evans and Jessi M’Bengue famously danced topless with Thicke and collaborators Pharrell and rapper TI.

The women paraded in front of a balloon sign reading: ‘Robin Thicke has a big d***.’

Emily accused Thicke of ‘groping’ her bare breasts behind the scenes of the music video in an essay named after the song in her collection My Body, which has just been released.

Emily writes: ‘Suddenly, out of nowhere, I felt the coolness and foreignness of a stranger’s hands cupping my bare breasts from behind.

‘I instinctively moved away, looking back at Robin Thicke. He smiled a goofy grin and stumbled backward, his eyes concealed behind his sunglasses,’ she wrote.

‘My head turned to the darkness beyond the set. [Director Diane Martel’s] voice cracked as she yelled out to me, ‘Are you okay?”

She said she felt ‘the heat of humiliation pump through’ her body after the alleged fondling and suddenly ‘felt naked for the first time that day.’

Thicke has not made any public comments or given an official statement regarding the allegation.
