Chelsea qualify but how far can they go in the Champions League?
They needed to win and so they did. Chelsea are through to the knockout stages of the Champions League after a 2-1win against Lille in their final group stage game played at Stamford Bridge.
After a 2-2 draw against Valencia, their qualification to the next round did not seem so assured.
The Blues playing in front of their home fans took an early lead to calm nerves as early as the 19th minute through Tammy Abraham who converted a cross by Willian.
Chelsea doubled the lead before the half time break as captain Caesar Azpilicueta rose highest to head in from a corner kick.
Chelsea cooled off in the second half and were prepared to hold on to their two goal advantage. That encouraged Lille to press and take initiative and later control of the encounter.
With some crisp interchange of passes, Lille found a breakthrough and pulled one back.
The Blues were on the backfoot for the rest of the game and did well not to concede. With Valencia beating Ajax in the other group game Chelsea advance.
However advancing to the next round is an achievement but doesn’t make them contenders. This young team are developing and have many lapses therefore much is not expected from them.
