The axe famously wielded by Jack Nicholson in classic 1980 film The Shining has sold for a whopping price of $175K.

Auction site GottaHaveRockAndRoll closed the auction over the weekend as the movie prop brought in about $100K more than expected.

The item from the Stanley Kubrick film had originally been projected to take in anywhere from $60K to 90K.

However there was quite the bidding war as 12 bids got the price up to a final bid of $140K. 

There is also a buyer’s premium of $35K for the item making for a grand total of $175K.

The axe was featured in several scenes in the classic film, most notably when Nicholson's character Jack Torrance uses it to break through a wooden door before exclaiming the iconic line: 'Here's Johnny!'

This is not the first time that the prop has been up for sale as it was previously bought for $61K.

According to TMZ the axe is light weight as it is made of foam and resin. 

 The listing states that the item comes displayed in a 25 x 2.5 x 40.5 shadow box frame with photos from the film.

It is regarded as one of the greatest films of all-time and raked in a box office total of $47.3million.
