Jordan De Goey assault charges NYC: AFL star was training for pre-season with sponsor Mother Energy

Troubled AFL star Jordan De Goey told club bosses he wanted to travel to America to work on his fitness ahead of the 2022 pre-season.

The Collingwood Magpies champ is facing serious assault charges in a New York court after allegedly groping a woman on a Halloween-themed night out on Saturday. He strenuously denies all allegations.

But club insiders are disappointed De Goey was in a position for such allegations to be levelled against him at all after selling his team on the trip by promising to train and get match-fit for next season.

The 25-year-old was in America on the dollar of his sponsor, Monster Energy drinks, training at The W Training Facility in southern California.

He arrived in mid-October for a six-week stay, hopeful he’d return to Australia in ‘the best shape mentally and physically’ of his career.

De Goey claimed the ‘shocking Covid stuff’ in Australia – particularly in Melbourne – made it ‘hard to train’ and was granted an exemption to leave his locked down city for work purposes.

For some AFL greats, including Collingwood legend Tony Shaw, there was hope ‘the penny had dropped’ for De Goey after several off-field incidents and he’d return from USA more mature and dedicated than ever.

He’d reportedly told the club of his desire to improve his fitness after starting ‘too many pre-seasons unfit and overweight’ and ambitions to nail down a lucrative new contract as he enters the final year of his current deal.

But after footage emerged of his wild shirtless Halloween celebrations, paired with the serious allegation that he groped a woman and punched a man, De Goey is now fighting to retain his spot in the team.

Should the AFL introduce a no-fault stand down policy like the one used in NRL?

‘Collingwood is deeply disappointed by reports of the last 48 hours involving De Goey in the US. Given the circumstances, the club believes it is appropriate to remove him from the AFL program,’ a club spokesman said in a statement.

While De Goey’s camp has been sharing photos and videos of his strenuous exercise regime in America, posts made by his mate Luke Dyson show the AFL star managed to squeeze in some downtime while abroad as well.

They have thus far remained tightlipped about whether the allegations will have any ramifications on his contracts.

Collingwood Magpies will reserve the right to terminate De Goey’s playing contract should he be convicted.

He has been charged with ‘forcible touching and assault’ after allegedly ‘grabbing buttocks and vagina outside clothing without permission or authority to do so of a 35-year-old female,’ according to a police report filed by NYPD.

After the alleged incident, police claim he ‘punched with a closed fist and kicked a 37-year-old male causing pain and swelling’.

The alleged victims did not seek medical attention.

De Goey faces one year in jail if convicted of either of the offences. As a first-time offender, he could potentially escape jail time and be placed on a six-year probation or community service order.

The 25-year-old has indicated he will fight the charges.

His next court appearance is scheduled for December 8, two days after his teammates are due to return to pre-season training.

But the club say De Goey is not welcome back until the matter is dealt with before the courts.

‘De Goey will not be permitted to train or play with Collingwood or make use of club resources, staff or facilities,’ a spokesman said.

‘The club will continue to pay De Goey under the terms of his contract until such time as an outcome to proceedings against him in the United States is reached or a more complete account of events is established.’

Just two weeks ago, De Goey spoke publicly about the grueling nature of his training regime in the United States, revealing he ‘jumped at the opportunity’ to visit Monster headquarters in California.

‘I thought it was a great idea to be able to mix up my training because it’s shocking what’s going on in Australia at the moment with the COVID stuff, it does make it hard to train,’ he told SEN Radio.

‘Definitely this will be the best shape I’ve come back in. I think mentally, as well, I’ll be in a really good headspace, and obviously physically I’m sure I’ll be fit, too.’
