Lady Gaga reflects on early acting career on talk show while getting Oscar buzz for House Of Gucci

Lady Gaga said she bombed her chance to appear in a LensCrafters ad when she was just starting out in her career on Monday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC.

The 35-year-old singer and actress said she got the call back for the commercial but that she froze because she was unaccustomed to cameras trained on her in the room. 

She said they politely told her ‘thank you’ which she said was their way of saying that she didn’t get it.

‘But I learned something that day. I learned all about rejection and how to take it like a queen,’ she said.

Jimmy, 54, asked her what she did on the weekend and if she watched football.

‘I watch football,’ said Gaga, wearing a short black dress. ‘I watch hockey, I play with my dogs.’

He asked her if playing the Super Bowl in 2017 was good for her and she said it was a huge honor. She said when she got the phone call to play that she just cried and ran around her room.

‘Then I don’t know why I made a rather silly decision to try to catch a touchdown at the end,’ said Gaga.

Jimmy told her that he thought it made perfect sense to show that at the end of her performance that she could catch a football. She said when she practiced that four out of five times she didn’t catch it.

She said she had a real quarterback come and throw her the ball. She said her sister Natali, 29, made her a football that was covered in diamond-like crystals that made the ball heavier. She said her sister even put her name on the ball.

He then played the video of her catching the football during her performance. She said she still had the football and that it was displayed somewhere.

Jimmy asked her if she played sports as a kid. She said she was briefly on the swim team but that she was a dancer.

Jimmy told her she was getting a lot of award recognitions for her acting in the film House Of Gucci. Jimmy asked her if she started acting and singing at the same time. She said she started acting earlier.

‘I always wanted to be an actress much more than I wanted to be a singer,’ Gaga said. ‘I always wanted to be an actress but I was really terrible at auditioning.’

She said she got into NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, but that she only went to college for ‘about five minutes.’ She said she majored in musical theatre and used to get in trouble because she went out on auditions.

Gaga recalled getting many call backs to play the role of Maureen in the domestic tour of Rent. She said when they found out she was only 17 that she wasn’t legally allowed to go on the tour and then the school found out she had been auditioning.

Jimmy asked her what it was like filming in Italy. He said he didn’t think he would be able to control himself. Gaga said she ate the entire time. She said the pizza, pasta and sandwiches were so good. She said she also basically had an espresso every hour. She said she spoke with her Italian accent all the time.

She said her cast were also ‘in it all the time.’ She said her family is so Italian and she told him she was going to be in the movie with Al Pacino. She said it was also great doing scenes with Jared Leto.

‘ We are both maniacs to a certain extent,’ she said. ‘I never met Jared on set. I was always with Paulo (Gucci).’

Jimmy asked about her love scene in the movie with Salma Hayek that ended up being cut from the movie. She said she had the idea to go over and kiss Salma after her husband had been killed in the movie. She said the only reason that isn’t in the movie was because the whole scene was cut. She said in the scene Salma was walking around her house followed by her cats because she had put catnip in her shoes.

‘I made out with Salma Hayek,’ said Gaga. ‘I’m like that really annoying kid in school that’s bragging that they made out with the popular girl but has no proof.’
