A police inspector has been charged with assault and attempting to pervert the course of justice, watchdogs said.

Inspector Andrew Minnery, 46, will appear in court on Friday alongside PC Kenny Gibson, 29, and PC Steve Cotton, all serving Merseyside Police officers.

Both PCs face a single charge of perverting the course of justice.

All three were charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following an investigation by police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The IOPC said it investigated the conduct of the three officers during and after the arrest of a man.

He subsequently made a complaint about the incident, which took place in Birkenhead, Merseyside, in March 2020.

All three officers are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
