Nigerians thought that they would wake up to a super Friday feeling but they were wrong! The President Buhari-led administration has given its citizens what can be termed as “Below the belt” punch with the increase of Petrol Price N172 to N212.
According to the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), the ex-depot price, price sold to marketers is N209.42 while the landing price is set at N189.61 per liter.
Recall that the NNPC had earlier denied claims of a potential increment of the Premium Motor Spirit. In a statement published by its Manager of Public Division Affairs, Kennie Obateru, the body refuted the claims and advised citizens against panic buying.
“Contrary to speculations of an imminent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) in the country, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has ruled out any increment in the ex-depot price of petrol in March 2021.”
“NNPC also cautioned petroleum products, marketers, not to engage in an arbitrary price increase or hoarding of petrol in order not to create artificial scarcity and unnecessary hardship for Nigerians.”
“The Corporation stated that it has enough stock of petrol to keep the nation well supplied for over 40 days and urged motorists to avoid panic buying.”
The increment is expected to have another toll of hardship on Nigerians majority of which are still struggling to afford basic needs which include food and shelter.
Here is how Nigerians are reacting on social media;
Hmmm waking up to the news of increment in PMS price.. The thing is that in Nigeria, prices of commodity rarely comes down.. You stopped paying Subsidy while the local refineries remains dead.. See its better Buhari return the subsidy regime oo before dem kill all of us!!

Worst part of this is that, if our constitution allowed a 3rd term, millions of Nigerians will still go out and vote for Buhari.

As if what we are facing in this country is not enough, fuel is now 212 naira per litre, I don't feel like we have a president in this country, Buhari is just something else entirely.

When Buhari was questing for power in 2015 he made a promise that petrol price would definitely decrease from N87. Today the petrol price is N212 per litre (almost triple itself). Apparently this is the change & the next level they promised us. And we still have 2yrs ahead, sad💔

From N87 to N145 to N147 back to N125 to N163 to N172 now N212 all these under Buhari's government.
And minimum wage is stagnant @ 30k. How will workers who are benchmarked on half salaries cope?

The difference between Jonathan's FUEL PRICE increase and Buhari's is that, there was some degree of freedom of expression under jonathan – so people were able to protest freely. Today, we go grumble to buy fuel N220/Liter. Buhari is still in charge but for dictatorial biddings.
