In 2018, in a bid to supply the Nigerian Air Force with adequate and top-notch equipment in the fight against Terrorism in the country, President Buhari approved the sum of $469.4 million for the purchase of 12 Super Tucano light-attack aircraft.

The sale of the 12 Super Tucano aircraft to Nigeria was approved under the administration of former President Donald Trump after the previous President, Barack Obama declined.

Sierra Nevada Corporation/Embraer Defense Corporation, the US group responsible for the manufacturing and sale of the Super Tucano jets took to its Twitter handle to announce the completion and test flight of the first jet.

According to Embraer, the Super Tucano;

“The A-29 Super Tucano is the most reliable and cost-effective solution for basic and advanced flight and combat training, close air support operations, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), armed over-watch, counterinsurgency and irregular warfare scenarios.”

Nigeria is expected to take delivery of the first Super Tucano jet in the second quarter of the year.
