President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed that Professor Mahmood Yakubu will continue to serve as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

President Buhari made the confirmation for Mahmood’s second tenure as INEC Chairman on Tuesday, October 27th.

Prof Yakubu was first appointed by President Buhari in November 2015 and was in charge of INEC during the 2019 general elections.

Yakubu will also serve as the chairman for the upcoming elections in 2023.

Yakubu’s continuation will be for another five years as provided by the constitution.

The presidency issued a statement about the reason why Yakubu was reappointed in a message on its official Twitter account.

“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term.”
