Super Eagles dream of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in slowly going down the drain with four matches into the qualification series.

The Super Eagles, after the disappointing draw against the Bafana of South Africa on Friday in Uyo, lost all three points to Benin Republic on Monday in Abidjan.

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr led “The Cheetars” to a famous victory over the Super Eagles since 2017.

Raphael Onyedika gave the Super Eagles the lead om the 27th minute from a well-taken strike on the edge of the box.

The Club Brugge midfielder received a brilliant pass from Chukwueze from the edge of the box before unleashing a right-footed strike onto the top-left corner to give Nigeria the lead.

Howeve, the lead only lasted for 10 minutes as Benin equalised. Calvin Bassey’s lack of prompt decision to clear a looping ball led to the goal.

Jodel Dossou took advantage of Bassey’s error, with only Nwabali to beat, placed the ball into the right corner to score his 9th goal for Benin Republic.

The Super Eagles defensive frailities continued and Brest striker, Steve Mounie took advantage from a corner kick to give the “home side” the lead in added mimutes of first half.

Super Eagles coach Finidi George made five changes in the second half with the introduction of Victor Boniface, Paul Onuachu, Ibrahim Olawoyin, Ismael Sodiq and Alhassan Yusuf.

However, the Super Eagles huffed and puffed all through the second half with no shot on target as Benin earned all three points.

The Super Eagles are now winless in their opening four matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series with three draws and one loss.

The Finidi George led Eagles are currently fifth on the log with 3 points after four matches which put their chances of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in huge doubt.
