Undergraduates under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have continued their protest against the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The students occupied the Murtala Muhammad international airport highway in the Ikeja axis of Lagos on Monday morning in a protest that resulted in gridlock — halting the vehicular movement in and out of the airport.

In now-viral videos, the protesters, in their hundreds, are seen calling on the federal government to meet the demands of ASUU to enable them to return to school.

They also displayed placards with various inscriptions, while chanting solidarity songs.

Security officials were deployed to the premises to maintain order.

The development comes a few days after the students blocked the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the Ibadan-Ife road.

ASUU has been in a tussle with the federal government since February 14, bringing educational activities in many government-owned tertiary institutions to a standstill over unmet demands.

Several meetings between the union and the federal government have ended in deadlock.

In response, the federal government referred the matter to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) for adjudication.

“It would be appreciated if this dispute is given an accelerated hearing in order to bring the dispute to an end,” Chris Ngige, the minister for labour and employment, told the court.
