Super Eagles World Cup Hope Shaky As South Africa Pick Point In Uyo 2

The Super Eagles of Nigeria chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup is getting slimmer by the day with matchday three done.

The Finidi George-led side failed to pick maximum points at home against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa as the match ended one-all.

It was a game of two halves as both teams had moments that could have secured maximum points for them respectively.

While the Super Eagles started the match quite well in the early stages, the South Africans settled in afterwards and dominated the home side.

Teboho Mokoena could have given the visitors the lead in the opening quarter of the match but his freekick from the edge of the box struck the crossbar.

With pressure on the Super Eagles defense, it didn’t take long before South Africa tool the lead. Themba Zwane reveived the ball on the edge on the box from Kamohelo Sithole, he cut through the defense with his trickery before burying the ball into the bottom right corner.

Stanley Nwabali came to Super Eagles rescue moments later as he rushed out of his goal to stop Khuliso Mudau from aiming at goal.

The Super Eagles registered two shots on targets towards the end of first half. Paul Onuachu’s header and Wilfred Ndidi’s long range strike were comfortably saved by Ronwen Williams.

The Super Eagles started the second half with better momentum and the goal came almost immediately.

Iwobi’s pass found Fisayo Dele-Bashiru on the edge on the box. The midfielder beat his marker with power before releasing a ferocious strike into the left corner to restore parity.

Samuel Chukwueze benefited from Super Eagles sustained dominance and he almost gave Nigeria the lead but his effort came off the crossbar after a beautiful pass from Alhassan Yususf.

Ademola Lookman struggled to put most of his shots on target on the night but with 10 minutes left to go, he forced a beautiful save from Rowen Williams as he tried to bend the ball from the edge of the box.

Substitute Tarem Moffi had the last chance of the game but the OGC Nice striker couldn’t sort his feet out as Williams rescued his side from a last minute defeat.

The game of two halves ended one-all as the Super Eagles continue to search for their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series with three draws from three matches.
