Horror shark attack in the Whitsundays as swimmer, 34, is mauled while climbing on to a boat

A 34-year-old man is recovering after being bitten by a shark in Queensland’s Whitsundays.

He was reportedly climbing into the back of a vessel when the shark latched on to his left leg about 6.40pm on Friday.

He suffered injuries to his thigh and shin and was taken by boat to a medical centre on Hamilton Island before being flown to Mackay Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Queensland Ambulance Service operations supervisor Julianne Ryals said the man received first aid from bystanders who did “excellent work”.

The man required stitches but was otherwise doing well.
