Tampa Baes: Lesbian reality show dubbed 'the next Vanderpump Rules' 2

Outrageous reality show Tampa Baes about feuding lesbian power couples in Florida has become a huge hit on social media – with viewers calling it the next Vanderpump Rules

Amazon Prime’s new lesbian reality series Tampa Baes has become a huge hit on social media over the last month.

The Florida-based show follows a diverse group of hard-partying lesbians in their twenties and thirties as they navigate friendships and the ups and downs of their niche social circle.

The drama largely centres around two prominent power couples who are both at odds with each other during the season.

There’s Brianna and Hayley, who are the queen bees of Tampa’s lesbian party scene, and Marissa and Summer, who are portrayed as being more down-to-earth.

The feud between the two couples reaches boiling point with drinks being thrown in a strip club, and it eventually divides the friendship group into two sides.

Despite the catfights, the show offers plenty of serious and heart-warming moments too.

Multiple coming out stories are featured throughout the season, and the impact of religion on homosexuality also becomes a hot topic.

Several cast members also deal with anxiety and mental health issues, while one ends up going to jail for a DUI.

Tampa Baes has become a huge hit on social media since premiering in November, with many comparing it to Vanderpump Rules.

‘So if you were ever like “I’m into the Real Housewives of Miami/Vanderpump Rules vibe but I wish it was all lesbians” I would like to draw your attention to a show called Tampa Baes,’ one fan tweeted.

Another wrote: ‘Tampa Baes is the best reality show on this planet tbh.’

‘There’s a new reality show called Tampa Baes about messy queer women in Florida and it’s the best messy messy queer nonsense,’ added another fan.

Showrunner Melissa Bidwell previously said that she knew she’d stumbled upon a ‘hidden gem’ when she came across the cast for the series.

‘When we heard about this group of friends in Tampa Bay, a true hidden gem for the LGBTQ+ community, we were blown away by how interesting each of the baes are,’ she said in a statement.

‘The show was not individually cast; everyone we follow is part of a pre-existing friend group [or] part of their larger social circle,’ she continued.

‘I was blown away with how candid the women were about what it means to be a lesbian in 2021 and what it’s like being a biracial, Hispanic, or Middle Eastern lesbian, etc.

‘We love that each woman expresses themselves in a different way and does what feels genuine to them.’

Co-producer Paul O’Malley shared a similar sentiment in an interview with the Tampa Bay Times.

‘Each person is at a pivotal moment in their lives. Whether it’s relationship stuff — getting married, getting engaged — or what it’s like being young and trying to find yourselves,’ he said.

‘I think people will see themselves in some of these girls … some people still haven’t been come out to family members. These women are going through quarter-life crises just like everyone else. And they happen to be gay.’
