Once the union between a young Nigerian man and a older American or British lady goes viral online, the usually narrative is that the young man did it to secure British or American citizenship.
However, socio-political critic and former Special Adviser on New Media to former President, Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri believes it is not exactly the case.
He believes that young Nigerian men are getting married to older white ladies because of the marriage list given to them by Nigerian women. He claims that the contents of the list is usually too expensive.
Reno Omokri said this on his Twitter page. His teeet reads;
Nigerian women complain that too many young Nigerian men marry older White women. It is not always paper job. Have you seen the marriage list some Nigerian women give men? It is enough to make a man impotent! Some Nigerian love is becoming too expensive #FreeLeahSharibu #EndSARS

As expected, his tweet generated some reactions from some of his followers. See reactions below.
Sir, the truth is that those lists are being written by men (we call them "ụmụnna" in Igbo Language which comprises of all the men, whether single or married, living in that village) from the woman's family claiming it to be their culture

Some will argue that this is tradition and I will ask them can't we amend some certain things in our tradition.. If we can amend how code of dressing,if we can amend the Osu cast system and so many other things so why can't we amend the extravagant marriage list..

Well said sir,how can a young man planning to start a family, exhaust his life savings just to show off to bride family all in the name of marriage,white women dont collect dowry or or give you long list,the guys are marrying for paper and peace of mind

When I have my daughter, I will train her myself. I will never write or be a party to any group of people writing list for someone's daughter's marriage. Thunder will fire anybody that will come out to write any stupid list on my daughter's head. I,am not selling her.

On Point Sir!
I've been dating some Nigerian ladies, but the list they gave me made me think 5x.
Now if I come across alady &I realize she is from Nigeria/W.Africa, am very careful. In https://t.co/KfP9gYSfZD esp S.Sudan it's very rare for ladies to ask MONEY from men, but W.Afri

Actually it is Nigerian men that give Nigerian men marriage list for their daughters, if the women can protest successfully, we would have done that since.

All these churches coming out everyday also compound the situation and not just culture and traditions. My friend was coerced to provided Suit for his pastor to wear for the marriage. The Pastor still insist he must provide Italian shoes or else he won't officiate.

Not some Nigerian love, every Nigerian love is expensive… every Nigerian lady has the same love condition and price like the other one….I see Nigerian ladies begging our men for marriage soon when it has become too late

Reno, I agree with you on the above. Beside the issue of lengthy list in the name of Bride Price, our ladies are also competing for ridiculous Award of BEST WEDDING IN TOWN. They have made it so expensive and scary thereby driving our men to waiting hands of divorced white ladies

It is the Family of the bride mostly the male folks that write those list, not the women. The bride does not even have a say, my dad's friend told me tradition is tradition no amendment, the annoying part is this are people who never bought 5kobo soda for you to bath.
