Social media users are abuzz over one woman’s bizarre relationship problem: Her boyfriend spends nearly all of his free time digging a tunnel on his property.
The 27-year-old woman posted anonymously on Reddit, writing that her 31-year-old boyfriend has spent about a year working on his ‘remarkably deep’ tunnel — and while he is always ‘happy’ when he comes home from hours of digging, she’s worried about his physical safety and mental health.
The woman said he no longer has a social life and barely even spends time with her anymore because ‘he isn’t doing anything but digging that damn hole in the ground.’
Her plea for advice was met with some responses on Reddit, but her post has gone viral on Twitter, where thousands of people have expressed surprise and confusion and cracked jokes about the man’s odd hobby.

‘How can I get my boyfriend to stop digging his tunnel?’ the Reddit post began.
‘So, I know this is a weird question, but my boyfriend likes to spend a lot of his free time digging a tunnel on some property that he inherited. I haven’t seen the full extent of it, but last I saw it was remarkably deep under the surface.
‘He’s spent roughly a year on it, and it’s evident. The front of the thing is deep, wide, well put together. At the front, which is the only part that I’ve seen, he’s got cement beams, electric lights, even chairs and a small table,’ she went on.
‘I haven’t gone into it, but it looked like the quality severely dropped as the tunnel went further, mostly becoming open dirt with some wood beams holding it up.’
The woman said that her biggest concern is her boyfriend’s safety, as she is worried the tunnel might collapse on him.
‘I’ve tried voicing this concern to him, but he just laughs it off and assures me that he’ll be fine,’ she said.
But she’s also worried that ‘he doesn’t really have a social life’ any more, because of this tunnel.

‘I’m pretty much the only person he still talks to outside of his job, and he doesn’t go out and do anything anymore,’ she wrote.
‘It used to be that he’d occasionally head out and do some digging on the weekends, but now he spends almost all of his free time out there. He still comes home, but he barely spends any time with me, and I know that he isn’t doing anything but digging that damn hole in the ground.
‘This can’t be good for his mental health, but I don’t know how to convince him to stop,’ she insisted.
‘He’s always really happy when he comes back from digging, which is why I haven’t seriously tried to stop him before, but I was talking to a friend about him, and she told me he might be going crazy. Obviously I don’t think he’s insane, but I hadn’t considered the mental health aspect of this, and I just don’t know what to do,’ she concluded.
In a follow-up comment, she added that as far as she knows, her boyfriend doesn’t have ‘a real goal in mind’ and ‘just likes the process of digging’: ‘I think he’s just doing it to have fun.’
Commenters have said he could be in real danger of the tunnel collapsing or oxygen deprivation, and some Twitter users have cracked jokes
On Reddit, commenters have noted that her safety concerns are legitimate. Not only could the tunnel collapse on him, they have pointed out, but if he doesn’t have proper ventilation while underground, he could run out of oxygen and die.
‘This is a very serious danger that kills people in mills, mines and factories all the time even with ventilation installed. The air down there does not get refreshed like it does on the surface,’ cautioned one commenter.
Another voiced concern that whatever he is doing could end up on Dateline or 20/20.
‘You’ll be the girlfriend that disappeared or either the one clueless about his kidnapping tendencies when he was holding someone captive in his underground lair,’ they said.
Twitter users are also baffled.
‘What on earth is going on with men??’ wrote Kate Whitaker.
‘Men will literally dig a completely pointless tunnel instead of going to therapy,’ suggested another Twitter user.
Others don’t think there is any greater problem at play and it’s just a harmless hobby
‘Somethings probably calling to him from beneath the ground. Happened to my buddy Sean. Turns out it was a goblin,’ said another.
‘This sounds like an H.P. Lovecraft story, gonna find out he’s digging because the earth is talking to him,’ one more wrote.
Others don’t think there is any greater problem at play.
‘Ladies, please. I simply ask that you allow this man to dig his tunnel without ridicule,’ wrote one.
‘Dude my brothers dug holes for fun, guys in Afghanistan would JUMP to dig holes any chance they could. Dudes just love holes,’ wrote another.
‘That’s just what men do for fun. They buy tools at the Home Depot that they will only use once a year, buy a fixer upper car only to work on it for an hour once a month, buy a bunch of history books about a war that happened 80 years ago, etc. Let them enjoy their hobbies,’ said a third.
