Recently, one of the Members of the UK Parliament alleged that former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon stole about half of the CBN and brought the assets to London.
The Member of Parliament made this allegation while the house were discussing some of the outcomes of the ENDSARS protest and LekkiMassacre incident.
However, former Minister of Agriculture and the incumbent President of the African Development Bank, Mr Akinwunmi Adesina put out a tweet in the defence of the former military President.
He said;
“Be careful of misinformation! H.E. General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, is a man of great honour, decency, honesty, amazing simplicity, humility and integrity. I know him. A great and admirable elder statesman of Nigeria. His honesty and integrity are impeccable.”

Nigerians on Twitter, especially the youths took turns in tongue-lashing the former minister in reaction to his defence of Yakubu Gowon.

A man with great honour, decency, honesty, amazing simplicity, humility and integrity killed 3 million Nigerians. A man who couldn’t honour aburi accord instead he killed 3 million Nigerians. Sir, please with all due respect go and sleep we know our history.

For someone who didn't say anything about #LekkiMassacre, why would I take you seriously?
This same Gowon killed over 3 million people and you use those words for him? Wow… I'm from Delta state, and 700 innocent men were slaughtered in one day in Asaba. This is wickedness

That you know him, doesn't make him a man of integrity.There are people that will vouch for Satan's holiness. He should issue a statement to defend or clarify things.Testimonies from his friends & admirers like you will do him no good.This generation no longer sees any hero past.

Please allow Gowon to defend himself. He is alive and can simply take a flight to England and sue the MP. Face your job in ADB and don’t get yoked in a controversial matter that can taint you. Thanks!

So fast to defend the indefensible but never made any positive comment while government was massaging the youths who believed so much in you. Politicians and top bureaucrats, okpa wa kin.

In 50 years, when we honour victims of #LekkiMassacre killed by the Army under the order of C-in-C PMB, a Nigerian Elite will say: "Be careful of misinformation! H.E General Buhari, is a man of great honour, decency, honesty, amazing simplicity, humility & integrity. I know him!"

A man of integrity would not have backtracked on the Aburi Accord.

Thankfully Gowon is still alive and lucid, i believe he can put up a defence backed with documents for himself, facts don't lie, but we need to see it.
This kind of tweet sir, amounts to "trying to paint him white" in our experience, it is done when the person has case to answer

@akin_adesina You were not a part of his administration – so I doubt if you can fully vouch for what he did during his time. Secondly, you are not his spokesman. Let him sue the MP if he knows he is as clean as a whistle. That was how some people said Abacha never stole.
