Breaking! Awoniyi Out Of Zimbabwe Clash, Returns To UK Tonight

Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi has been ruled out of the match against Zimbabwe on Sunday.

Awoniyi was on the pitch for about an hour before he was substituted for Tarem Moffi as the Super Eagles forced Lesotho to a draw in the opening match of their World Cup qualification campaign.

Following a disappointing start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series against Lesotho on Thursday, the Super Eagles will be without the Nottingham Forest striker as they take on the Warriors in Rwanda.

According to a post on the X page of the Super Eagles on Friday, Awoniyi picked up a groin injury against Lesotho and was adviced by the medical team to withdraw and return to the United Kingdom to begin his recovery process.

With Awoniyi out, the Super Eagles fall short of another striker with the absence of Victor Osimhen who is also nursing an injury currently.

The Super Eagles played a one-all draw against Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo but will look to get their World Cup qualification back on track when they take on Zimbabwe at the Huye Stadium on Sunday.

South Africa, Rwanda, Benin Republic are the other teams grouped alongside the Super Eagles for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
