Paris Olympic Games: Super Falcons On The Brink Of Exit After Narrow Loss To Spain

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are on the brink of crashing out of the women’s football event at the ongoing Paris Olympic Games after losing their second group stage match.

The Nigerian ladies lost 1-0 to Spain on Sunday evening in a match that was largely dominated by the reigning world champions.

Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Paris FC goalkeeper made the scoreline marginal after she made about 7 saves in both halves.

The nine-time African champions continued their struggle in front of goal as they missed the chance to go ahead in the match in the first half.

Asisat Oshoala played Rasheedat through on goal but the Atletico Madrid forward fluffed the chance despite being 1 v 1 against the Spanish goalkeeper.

Randy Waldrum’s team was resolute in defense as they kept the world champions at bay for more than 80 minutes.

However, the breakthrough came for the Spanish ladies on the 85th minute as Barcelona Femini midfielder Alexia Putellas beat Nnadozie for the first time to give Spain the lead.

Salma Paralluelo had initially given Spain the lead a few minute after restart but her goal was ruled out by the video assistant referee.

The Super Falcons have now lost their opening two matches and face the possibility of crashing out of the competition.

However, the team have a chance of qualifying for the quater-finals as one of the best third-placed teams if they beat Japan on Wednesday in their final group match and hope for a favorable result in the match between Spain and Brazil and the two other third-placed teams in Group A and Group B.
