The National Sports Commission has confirmed the payment of the Naira equivalent of $100,000 to each D’Tigress player and $50,000 to team officials, completing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential reward package for the team’s historic FIBA Women’s AfroBasket triumph.
The cash reward honours D’Tigress’ fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall, a feat that has cemented Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball. D’Tigress beat Mali 78-64 in the 2025 AfroBasket final to retain their continental crown, extending a run of championships that stretches back to 2017 and reaffirming their status as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
According to a statement from the NSC’s Director of Information, Dr Kehinde Ajayi, the players’ and officials’ accounts were credited on September 9, 2026, with all beneficiaries confirming receipt.
The payment completes the full suite of presidential rewards promised to the squad, which also included a three-bedroom flat in Abuja and national honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for each player and official. The title documents and honours certificates were presented earlier in February 2026 in Lyon, France, during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
The disbursement comes just days after D’Tigress’ disappointing outing at the ongoing FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany, where the team failed to progress past the group stage, losing all three of their fixtures against South Korea, Hungary and France.
The NSC also used the announcement to thank the federal ministers involved in facilitating the disbursement, while confirming that a similar reward package is being finalised for the Super Falcons, who won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for a tenth time in Morocco earlier this year.
Like D’Tigress, the Super Falcons are set to receive the same three-bedroom flat, OON honours and Naira equivalent of $100,000 for players and $50,000 for officials, with the NSC confirming those alerts are expected before the team’s next official engagement.
