OTD in 2018: VAR was used for the 1st time in France vs Australia at the World Cup (video)
On June 16, 2018, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was used for the first time at the FIFA World Cup.
The game was the fifth group stage encounter of the game, ended goalless at the halftime break.
The breakthrough will come through the intervention of the VAR by Uruguayan referee Andrés Cunha.
Antoine Griezmann was brought down in the box but the referee waved play on but the intervention of VAR ruled it a penalty.
Griezmann stepped up to convert the penalty and put France one goal ahead in the 58th minute.
Australia found an equalizer thanks to another intervention by VAR spotting a handball by Samuel Umtiti, Mile Jedinak stepped up to convert the spot-kick.
France would get the winner through an own goal by Aziz Behich who converted a shot by Paul Pogba into his own net.
France sealed all three-point in front of 41,279 fans in attendance at the Kazan Arena, thanks to VAR.
