On August 2, 1996, Hakeem Olajuwon led the United States of America (USA) to win Gold medal at the Atlanta 96 Olympic Games on home soil.

The USA beat the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia 69–95 in the final to win the Gold medal.

Olajuwon who was born in Lagos, Nigeria chose to represent the USA at the Olympic Games.
