Nigeria’s David Okereke scored an amazing solo goal for Venezia against Empoli in the Serie A on Saturday which the Italian media have dubbed as the most beautiful goal of the week, possibly of the month.

Okereke, who had come on for the injured Antonio Junior Vacca one minute earlier, embarked on the mazy run which saw him overpower three defenders and the goalkeeper before unleashing a left foot sizzler into the net.

The media was understandably ecstatic about the goal and described it in superlative terms.

Gazzetta dello Sport, the leading Italian sports daily, said: “The magic of Okereke illuminates Venezia against Émpoli,” while Tuttosport’s screaming headline said: “Venezia show in Empoli: Weah-style capolavoro (goal) by Okereke ”,  comparing him to the legendary George Weah.

According to football website www.lanacion.com.ar, “Nobody imagined what was to come, but in a dizzying moment and a play for history, the ball ended up inside the local goal.”

It was Venezia’s first victory of the season and they have now moved up to 12th spot ahead of the conclusion of this weekend’s fixtures.

Okereke is on loan from Belgian side Club Brugge and is also a Nigeria international.
