Nigeria’s representatives on the continent this season, Akwa United and Rivers United began their quest to qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League on an impressive note.
Reigning league champions, Akwa United recorded a 1 nil victory over CR Belouizdad at the next of Champions on Sunday while Rivers United won by the same scoreline away from home over Young Lions of Tanzania.
Friday Ubong’s late strike ensured that Akwa United will go into the second leg of the fixture with a slim margin.
Both teams will play their respective return fixtures on the 19th of September as they look to qualify for the next round of the preliminary rounds as well as the group stage of the competition.
Akwa United last played on the continent in 2018 when they crashed out in the third round of the CAF Confederations Cup while Rivers United last featured in the CAF Champions League in 2017 where they crashed out in the second round of qualification.
