Defending champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Akwa United began their title defense with an emphatic 3 nil victory over former champions, Kano Pillars.
Goals from Ezekiel Bassey, Stephen Chukwude, and Friday Ubong gave the Uyo-based team three points and three goals on matchday 1 of the new season.
Kano Pillars had two shots on target in the match but failed to convert any as they watched the defending champions tear them apart in sublime fashion at the next of champions.
Remo Stars recorded the first away win of the season as Gbenga Ogunbote’s men defeated MFMFC 2 nil at the newly-renovated Onikan Stadium (Mobolaji Johnson Arena).
In other results, Finidi George’s winning streak with Enyimba continued as they defeated rival – Abia Warriors 2-1 in the Aba Derby.
Ekene Awazie gave the home side the lead in the 14th minute. The Aba Elephants held on to their lead until the 50th minute before Paul Samson got the equalizer for the away side.
With less than 15 minute to the end of the enthralling affair, Chigozie Obasi got the winner for the Aba Elephants.
