Taiwo Awoniyi marked his first Coventry City start with a goal and an assist as the Sky Blues fought back to beat Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup at Home Park. Awoniyi joined Coventry from Nottingham Forest last week, and he needed just three minutes to open his account for his new club.
Caleb Yirenkyi flicked on Liam Kitching’s through ball to send Awoniyi clear, and the striker beat goalkeeper James Storer with a side-footed finish from the left side of the box. Two minutes later, Awoniyi turned provider, releasing Jack Rudoni to double Coventry’s lead with a finish from the edge of the box.
Plymouth hit back before the break and drew level early in the second half. Danny Irow marked his debut with a goal in the 21st minute, cutting in from the left to beat the Coventry defense, before Xavier Amaechi levelled the score at 2-2 nine minutes into the second half.
Coventry responded quickly to the setback. Substitute Ephron Mason-Clark restored the lead within five minutes of coming on in the 62nd minute, and Victor Torp added a fourth from the penalty spot in the 78th minute to seal the win.
The Nigerian forward was o for 70 minutes before Coventry brought on fellow new signing Sidiki Cherif in his place. The performance followed a substitute cameo in Coventry’s 3-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal, and it gave the striker his first goal involvement for the club.
The win sends Coventry through to the third round of the Carabao Cup as they continue life back in the Premier League this season.
