Balogun & Aribo: Travelling to Cotonou by sea is strange but winning the game is important

Nigerian duo Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun have admitted they are baffled why they are being made to travel for their next game in a boat.

The Super Eagles face neighbours Benin Republic in an AFCON qualifier at the weekend and the Nigerian FA have decided to travel to the match by way of boat along the Gulf of Guinea from Lagos to the Charles de Gaulle stadium at Port Novo.

The decision was taken to avoid traffic between the two cities, which would have extended the journey to several hours compared with a 90 minute ferry ride.

Rangers of Scotland pair Aribo and Balogun appeared to be bemused at the unusual method of travel.

Balogun said “I guess we have to be okay with it, I will say it’s a bit unusual but that’s just how it is. The most important thing is that we get there in one piece and win the game”

Aribo stated ” I have never travelled by sea anywhere before. Travelling on a boat it is what it is. We can’t use it as an excuse and we have to go out and make sure we get the victory”

The Super Eagles are billed to face Lesotho on Wednesday in the second of two qualifying games in the race to Africa’s premier competition.
