South Africa beat Nigeria 2-1 in Casablanca on Thursday to book their place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup inter-confederation play-offs, ending the Super Falcons’ bid to qualify for a 2027 World Cup ticket via the back door.
Thembi Kgatlana broke the deadlock in the 56th minute from a swift South African counter attack, latching onto a pass from Hildah Magaia to fire Banyana Banyana into the lead at the Moulay Rachid Stadium.
Captain Refiloe Jane doubled South Africa’s advantage in the 77th minute, converting from close range to put the result beyond Nigeria’s immediate reach. Jane, who had been booked in the 28th minute, was sent off in stoppage time for handling the ball inside her own box, with the referee pointing to the spot.
Chiamaka Ucheibe stepped up to convert the resulting penalty in the third minute of added time, but the late strike proved only a consolation as South Africa held on with ten players.
Nigeria had made a string of changes in search of an equaliser, with Jennifer Omewa, Flourish Ijamilusi, Ucheibe, and Gift Monday all introduced from the bench, while Francisca Ordega was also booked in the 61st minute before making way for Ijamilusi.
The defeat means Nigeria will miss out on the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament’s inception in 1991, a record the Super Falcons had preserved through every previous edition.
South Africa now advance to the six-team preliminary round of the inter-confederation play-offs later this year, joining the winner of the Ghana-Cote d’Ivoire tie as Africa’s two remaining representatives in the race for a place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
