Bayern Munich confirmed on Thursday that head coach Julian Nagelsmann has tested positive for Covid-19, despite being fully vaccinated. Nagelsmann had already missed Bayern’s Champions League victory over Benfica due to illness.
“Julian Nagelsmann has tested positive for the coronavirus despite being fully vaccinated,” the German giants said in a statement.”
“He will return to Munich separately from the team by air ambulance and will isolate at home”
Nagelsmann was forced to sit out Wednesday’s 4-0 hammering of Benfica in Lisbon due to illness, and his assistant coaches Dino Toppmoeller and Xaver Zembrod stepped in.
Bayern has not stated how long the 34-year-old will be out of action.
Before the November international break, the team has a demanding schedule with five games in the next two weeks.
Anyone who tests positive for Covid in Bavaria is required to stay in home isolation for a fortnight under existing regulations.
Bayern Munich proved they can win without Nagelsmann by scoring twice in Lisbon, putting the Germans five points clear at the top of Group E.
Before Saturday’s home game against Hoffenheim, they are also a point clear at the top of the Bundesliga table.
