Breaking! CAF Awards Super Eagles 3 Points, 3 Goals, Fines Libya $50,000 Over Botched AFCON Qualifier

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have awarded the Super Eagles of Nigeria 3 points and 3 goals following the botched 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.

The decision comes 14 days after the Super Eagles of Nigeria were held at the Al Abraq Airport 300km from Benghazi for 20 hours without access to food, water and internet access.

Recall that the Super Eagles were scheduled to land at the Benghazi Airport on Sunday 13, 2024 at about 20:00hrs but their Value Jet flight was diverted to Al Abraq an hour before landing.

The hostage situation led to the deletion of the return fixture of the qualifier by CAF after the Super Eagles won the first leg 1-0 in Uyo.

In a CAF disciplinary hearing on the matter held on Wednesday 23, November, the following decisions were reached:

  1. The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the AfricanCup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
  2. The match No.87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October 2024 in Benghazi) is declared lost by forfeit
by Libya (by a score of 3-0).

3 The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000.

  1. The fine is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision.
  2. All other and further motions or prayers for relief are dismissed.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria now have 10 points after and a +7 goal difference after 4 matches in the qualification series.
