Newly-promoted Premier League side Coventry City have officially unveiled Taiwo Awoniyi as their newest signing, with the club sharing images and posts across social media introducing the Nigeria international to their supporters.

The unveiling follows the completion of a permanent transfer from Nottingham Forest, with Coventry moving quickly to present their new striker in the club’s colours. Various posts circulated on X throughout the day showing Awoniyi in Coventry’s sky-blue kit, drawing an enthusiastic response from fans eager to see the experienced forward begin his new chapter.

Speaking on his move, Awoniyi expressed excitement about joining his new teammates. “I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates. I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship, they were incredible and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season,” he said.

Taiwo Awoniyi was warmly welcomed by his national team buddy, Frank Onyeka, who joined the club on a permanent deal in the summer after a successful loan spell from Brentford.

Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 and made over 100 appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals in 90 Premier League outings during his time at the City Ground. He played an important role in Forest’s relegation survival campaign and their subsequent fight to establish themselves in the top flight, though the latter part of his spell was affected by injuries and increased competition for a starting place.

Before his move to Germany, Awoniyi began his senior career at Liverpool, later spending time on loan at Mainz, before his switch to Union Berlin helped establish him as a proven Premier League-standard forward.

At Coventry, Awoniyi is set to wear the number 9 shirt as Frank Lampard’s side prepare for their return to the Premier League after 25 years away from the top flight. His arrival adds proven goalscoring experience to a squad that also welcomed midfielder Gus Hamer, goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, and defender Aurele Amenda in the same transfer window.

Awoniyi received a guard of honour from Nottingham Forest players and staff during the club’s final pre-season friendly, a gesture that reflected the impression he left during his time there. Forest manager Oliver Glasner praised his character following the match, describing him as one of the most well-liked figures in the squad.

With his unveiling now complete, Awoniyi is expected to link up with his new Coventry teammates as the club looks to build on a strong pre-season that included victories over Monaco and Espanyol ahead of their Premier League opener against Arsenal.
