Enugu Rangers Wins Oriental Derby To Reclaim NPFL Top Spot

Enugu Rangers showed grit and tenacity as they toppled Rivers United to the top of the Nigeria Premier League with three matches left.

The Flying Antelopes came from a goal down to claim maximum points over rivals Enyimba at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday night.

After a goalless affair in the first half, Wonah Williams put the visitors ahead five minutes into the second half to unsettle the nerves of the host.

However, Chidozie Iwundu bagged his ninth goal of the season as he pounced on a rebound to restore parity for the host after the hour mark.

Seven minutes later, Ifeanyi Onyebuchi gave Enugu Rangers the lead from a brilliant finish to send the fans into a frenzy.

The maximum points take Enugu Rangers to the top of the table following Rivers United’s loss at Kano Pillars.

Enugu Rangers, with 59 points, top the table, while Rivers United are second, one point behind, with three matches to go.

Meanwhile, Remo Stars and Shooting Stars got wins with regard to their ambitions for the season.

The defending champions got out of the drop zone with an emphatic 3-0 win over Niger Tornadoes in Ikenne.

Shooting Stars arguably got the biggest result of the day as the Oluyole Warriors bagged a 2-1 win away at El Kanemi.

The result pushes Shooting Stars to a point behind Abia Warriors in fourth spot at the top of the table as they continue to chase a place on the continent next season.

The battle of the third and fourth ended in favour of Abia Warriors as they edged Ikorodu City 2-1 in Umuahia.

After match day 35, Warri Wolves, Kun Khalifat, Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists occupy the last four teams at the bottom of the table.
