The D’Tigers of Nigeria defeated Uganda 95-69 on Sunday to take the lead in Group A of the African Qualifiers for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Following a 71-79 loss to Cape Verde on Friday, when window one of the matches began, the Nigerian team defeated Mali 72-70 on Saturday.

With an overwhelming victory over the East Africans on Sunday, they reclaimed leadership of the group.

At the City Arena in the Angolan city of Benguela, the squad seized the game by the cuff from the jump-ball, winning the first quarter 25-18.

The second quarter was very identical to the first, with a 28-19 victory, while the D’Tigers cruised through the third quarter, winning 14-8.

The Ugandans fought back in the fourth quarter to reclaim their honor, but the Nigerians were unstoppable, winning 28-24.

Ike Diogu, the team’s captain, was once again inspirational, scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Sixteen African countries will compete in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 African Qualifiers over the course of 15 months in five tournament windows.

From November 2021 to February 2023, five African national teams will compete for a place in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

The World Cup will be held in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines from August 25 to September 10, 2023.
