The Super Falcons of Nigeria are intensifying preparations ahead of their opening match against Canada at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The team, led by coach Randy Waldrum is currently camped at the Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre, Queensland, Australia and have observed five days of training sessions since their arrival on Tuesday, last week.
Nigeria will take on Canada in their opening match at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. Both teams have met five times previously with the Super Falcons wining just one which came at the 2011 edition of the edition in Germany. The 1-0 victory was courtesy of Perpetual Nkwocha’s 84th minute goal.
The Super Falcons have twice against Canada and both were in friendly matches in 2019 and 2022. However, Nigeria remains unbeaten against Canada at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Both teams have met twice: the first meeting was in 1995 which ended in a 3-3 daw and the last was in 2011 which the Super Falcons won.
Randy Waldrum will look to keep that record intact as the Super Falcons take on the Canadian ladies who have one just one of their last five matches.
The Super Falcons on the hand are in decent form having won 3 of their last 5 matches. One of the victories was against New Zealand, one of the co-hosts of this year’s edition of the competition. The friendly match ended 3 nil in favour of the Nigerian ladies
