AFCON 2021: Facts and Figures to know as Super Eagles take on Guinea Bissua in final group match

AFCON 2021: Facts and Figures to know as Super Eagles take on Guinea Bissua in final group match 2

Guinea Bissau’s Wild Dogs will face Nigeria, who has already qualified and is leading the group, on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Garoua.

Despite many absences and technical changes, Nigeria’s Super Eagles established themselves as one of the tournament’s favorites with a strong performance in their first two games.

A convincing win over Egypt, followed by another against Sudan, ensured that the Super Eagles would finish first in their group, regardless of the outcome of Wednesday’s match.

  • Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria will meet for the first time at the Africa Cup of Nations.
  • Guinea-Bissau is still winless in eight Africa Cup of Nations matches (D3 L5); only Benin (14), Mozambique (12), and Namibia (9) have played more games in the tournament without a win.
  • In this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, Taiwo Awoniyi has attempted nine shots, more than any other Nigerian player. In addition, he has had more touches in the opposition’s box than any other Nigerian player in the country’s first two matches of this tournament (14).
  • Guinea-Bissau are yet to score in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations despite having attempted 16 shots with an xG total of 2.21 in their two matches so far. They have failed to score in their last six Africa Cup of Nations matches; no nation has ever gone seven consecutive games without scoring in the competition’s history.
  • Nigeria has won 11 of their last 13 Africa Cup of Nations (L2) matches, including both so far in this year’s tournament. They last won all three of their first three games in a tournament in 2006.
  • If Nigeria wins, they will be the only team to have qualified for the last 16 round of the 33rd AFCON by winning all of their group matches.
