Jeanie Buss net worth

Jeanie Buss net worth is $500 million. When she was 19, she became the general manager of the Los Angeles Strings, a professional tennis team.

Jeanie Buss is the daughter of late owner Jerry Buss and the President and controlling owner of the Los Angeles Lakers.

After purchasing the Los Angeles Blades roller hockey team, she became president of the Great Western Forum. Following her father’s death, she was named Lakers vice president.

Background

Jeanie Marie Buss was born on September 26, 1961 in Santa Monica, California. When her father became successful in the real estate business, Joann and Jerry Buss raised Jeanie and her three siblings. Jerry bought an apartment building in West Los Angeles in the 1960s.

This would pave the way for the Ph.D. in physical chemistry graduate to launch a string of profitable real estate ventures. Mariani-Buss Associates, a real estate investment firm, was founded by Jerry Buss and his business partner Frank Mariani.

By this point, Jerry had divorced, leaving Joanie with serious emotional issues. She did, however, keep close contact with her father. Around this time, Jerry began acquiring a number of sports teams in the Los Angeles area.

Among them were the Los Angeles Strings, the Los Angeles Kings hockey team, and the Los Angeles Lakers. At the age of 14, she began attending World Team Tennis meetings with Jerry, where she learned valuable lessons that she would later apply to managing the Los Angeles Strings. When she was 17, she chose to live with her father and moved in with him full-time.

Despite selling his majority stake in the Kings, Jerry remained committed to closely managing the Lakers. Buss paid $67.5 million for The Forum as part of a string of sports-related acquisitions. Under Buss’ ownership, the Lakers won ten championships and boasted an all-star lineup that included James Worthy, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant. Jerry was instrumental in the Lakers becoming a $1 billion franchise.

Career

Jeanie attended college while her father taught her the ins and outs of business and sports management. She attended the University of Southern California and majored in business, graduating with honors.

During her college years, Jerry hired Jeanie, then 19, as the new manager of the Los Angeles Strings. After becoming the owner of the Los Angeles Blades in Roller Hockey International, Jeanie spent four years as the president of the Great Western Forum, the Lakers’ stadium at the time.

She eventually demonstrated her business acumen to Jerry, who wanted her to run the Lakers’ business while her brother Jim handled sports-related decisions. She had established herself as one of the most powerful women in sports by 2005. Buss fired both General Manager Mitch Kupchak and her brother Jim, who was Vice President of Basketball Operations, after Jerry’s death in 2013.

After three years of marriage, Jeanie divorced professional volleyball player Steve Timmons in 1990. She explained that she put her career ahead of her marriage.

After posing naked for “Playboy,” she became engaged to Phil Jackson, the former Lakers head coach. The couple announced in 2016 that they were no longer planning to marry.

Legal Issues in the Family

In 2017, Jeanie’s brother Johnny attempted to take over The Lakers from his sister. After a lengthy battle, Jeanie was able to gain even more control of the team. She now bears sole responsibility for all Laker family decisions.

In 2019, Buss’s Playa Vista home was reported to have sold for $2.575 million. In 2017, she paid $2.45 million for the property. She agreed to the price reduction despite the fact that the house was originally listed for $225,000 more than the final selling price.

Having said that, Buss did work on the property after purchasing it two years prior in order to make it more appealing to potential buyers. Before re-listing the property, it was given a fresh coat of neutral paint and new fixtures.

Her previous Playa Vista home has nearly 3,200 square feet of living space and is on a corner lot. There is also a flagstone patio, French doors, and a three-car garage. Buss is also accused of owning another property in Playa Vista, which she allegedly purchased in 2018.

In 2020, Jeanie purchased a new home in Los Angeles’ Playa del Rey neighborhood. The house, which is conveniently located near Los Angeles International Airport, cost her $2.6 million. Among the notable features of the four-bedroom waterfront property are a pool, spa, and gym.
