John Martin Robinson is a British historian and officer of arms. He participates in the annual service of the Order of the Garter

Career and Education

He was born in Preston, Lancashire, and was educated at Fort Augustus Abbey, a Benedictine school in Scotland, the University of St Andrews (where he received an MA and a D.LITT in 2002), and then Oriel College, Oxford, where he began his DPhil studies in 1970. The doctorate was awarded in 1974 for research on architect Samuel Wyatt.

From 1974 to 1986, he worked for the Greater London Council’s Historic Buildings Division, where he served as architectural editor of the Survey of London, Historic Buildings Inspector for Westminster, and revised the Statutory Lists of Historic Buildings for two east London boroughs.

Since 1988, he has worked as an independent consultant on the restoration of numerous country houses, churches, and other historic structures. His contribution to the 7 Dials and Covent Garden Conservation Plan in London earned him the Camden Environmental Award in 1998. In collaboration with Rick Mather Architects, he also wrote the Conservaytion Plan for the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

For over 40 years, he has been an Architectural Writer for Country Life, contributing nearly 400 articles and reviews. As chairman of Westminster Cathedral’s Art and Architecture Committee, he oversaw the completion of the mosaics in St George’s and St Joseph’s chapels, the Vaughan Chantrey, and several individual panels.

Robinson joined the College of Arms in 1982 as Fitzalan Pursuivant Extraordinary and is now Maltravers Herald Extraordinary. He was appointed Librarian to the Duke of Norfolk Earl Marshal in 1978.

Robinson is also a Sovereign Military Order of Malta Knight of Magistral Grace. He lives at Beckside House in Cumbria and is an active member of the Georgian Group, of which he was a trustee and vice-chairman for 20 years, acquiring their HQ Adam townhouse in Fitzroy Square, founding and presiding over the Annual Conservation Awards for ten years from 2003 to 2013.

He served on the National Trust’s North West Regional Committee for ten years and is the National Trust’s Heraldic Adviser. He served on the Council of the Society of Antiquaries, the council of the National Records Association, and is a trustee of Arundel Castle, Burghley House, and Wilton House for 25 years. He was a founding member of the Friends of Christ Church Spitalfields and was instrumental in the establishment of the Spitalfields Music Festival.

His scholarly book on James Wyatt is the final word on the subject. His New Georgian Handbook, co-written with Harpers Magazine’s Alexandra Artley, was the architectural face of the Young Fogey movement and has become collectible.
