On August 3, 1997, Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties to win the 1997 Charity Shield.
The first half was goalless as both teams went to the halftime break level.
It was former Manchester United player Mark Hughes that put Chelsea in front in the 52nd minute.
The lead did not last for long as Manchester United equalized in the 58th minute through Ronny Johnsen.
There will be no extra time as the game proceeded to penalty.
Sinclair and Di Matteo missed for Chelsea while Zola and Leboeuf scored.
Scholes, Irwin, Keane, and Butt all scored for Manchester United who won the shoot out 4-2 in front of 73,636 fans in attendance at the Wembley Stadium, London.
